Surely Canada’s aboriginal community has been waiting long enough. The goal of this inquiry should be to examine all of the facts surrounding violence against aboriginal women — even the uncomfortable ones — in order to make critical, informed, measurable improvements. Canada’s usually stoic Justice Minister, Jody Wilson-Raybould, allowed her voice to waver as she took to the podium at the Museum of History in Gatineau on Wednesday and launched her government’s long-awaited inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women. RelatedNevertheless, it’s clear that after many years of dismissing calls for an inquiry — as was the case under the Harper government — abandoning this promise now would be an intractable impediment to true reconciliation with Canada’s indigenous communities. The NDP has already called on the government to commit to accepting all of the inquiry’s recommendations, sight unseen, a month before the inquiry has even launched.
