Canada's coach John Herdman responded by sacrificing forward Melissa Tancredi and inserting defender Rebecca Quinn, but still Australia was able to find open spaces. Forward Janine Beckie scored in the game's opening 20 seconds, the fastest goal in Olympic soccer history. The Australians would come to rue their missed chances as Canada regrouped in the second half. With fists pumping Sinclair and team celebrated the upset.
