Email us at newstips@stuff.co.nzFire and emergency (FENZ) shift manager Carlos Dempsey said the caravan was well ablaze when firefighters arrived at the scene on the Kāpiti expressway, near Waikanae, about 2.25pm. Dane Houghton, who lives "just down the road" from where the caravan caught fire, said he heard a "big bang". Just after 5pm, the New Zealand Transport Agency said all lanes had reopened on the Kāpiti expressway after southbound traffic had earlier been reduced to one lane.
