Murchison Hut near the head of the Murchison Glacier. Photo: NZ HeraldA popular alpine hut in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park has been "closed" over fears that the rocky slope below it could catastrophically collapse. Murchison Hut is popular with commercially-guided and private ski-tourers. Tekapo-based guiding company Alpine Recreation, founded by former prime minister Helen Clark's guide, the late Gottlieb Braun-Elwert, takes clients into the Murchison Glacier. Company spokesman Axel Reiser said the hut's closure limited the options for people on the Murchison Glacier.
