Rising COVID-19 cases in northern Ontario schools raise concerns as reopenings set for Monday


“Unfortunately, that luck has run out.”Six schools in Sudbury have reported cases of COVID-19, totalling 22 cases. Most recently, Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) reported an outbreak in St. Charles College the evening of Jan. 26 after three people tested positive for COVID-19. “We want to be face to face — you can’t replicate learning online.”As of Thursday, the province is reporting 35 COVID-19 cases in northern Ontario schools and 352 active cases in total in northern Ontario. On Jan. 25, elementary and secondary students in seven southern Ontario public health units returned to in-person learning: Grey Bruce; Haliburton/Kawartha/Pine Ridge; Peterborough; Hastings/Prince Edward; Leeds/Grenville/Lanark; Renfrew; Kingston/Frontenac/Lennox and Addington. Students in five Ontario COVID-19 hot spots — Toronto, Peel, York, Hamilton and Windsor — will continue with e-learning until at least Feb. 10.
