Review: Enthusiasm and excellence on showSIMON O'CONNOR/Fairfax NZ The National Youth Brass Band in rehearsal. Review: National Youth Brass BandTheatre Royal, New PlymouthWednesday, January 25Enthusiasm and excellence were the hallmarks of a superb concert by the 2017 National Youth Brass Band of New Zealand in New Plymouth on Wednesday evening. The first half of classical arrangements opened with impressively bouncy big instruments for the Academic Festival Overture by Brahms. With Bremner's assured and finely-focussed conducting style the players managed an impressive range of tempi and dynamic variations. Luke Spence produced a superbly controlled sound on his euphonium for the solo in Hummel's Fantasy, including some lightning fast triple tonguing.
