Retiree loses over RM328,000 to phone scam

KUANTAN: A retiree was cheated of more than RM328,000 last month after falling victim to a phone scam. Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the 64-year-old received a WhatsApp call from someone posing as a police officer from Putrajaya. "The victim transferred his savings into the accounts on Feb 5 as instructed and shared his banking details with the suspect,” he said in a statement today. Yahaya said the victim realised he had been scammed after checking his accounts yesterday and finding them empty, and being unable to contact the suspect. The victim lodged a report at the Rompin district police headquarters, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
