Retailers seek relief from pressure of lockdown rent bills


Some landlords are doing rent deals with retail tenants, but the Omni has stood out in the sector for the intransigence of its approach. Among the Omni tenants hit with High Court actions over rent disputes since the pandemic began are pharmacy giant Boots, cult restaurant chain Nando’s, and supermarket giant Tesco. By last September two-thirds of Irish retailers surveyed by Retail Excellence were still carrying arrears from the first lockdown last spring. They have bills to pay too, and some retail landlords are also SMEs. The Government published a voluntary code of practice in September for engagement between landlords and retail tenants.
