Researchers say population of proboscis stable - Nation

KOTA KINABALU: The population of Sabah’s indigenous proboscis monkeys have remained stable although their groups have reduced in sizes, a recent research showed. One reason for the relatively stable population could be that there were only minor losses of forest along the rivers where proboscis monkeys are generally found, said Hutan Scientific director Dr Marc Ancrenaz. These reduced losses were the result of increased protection for these habitats in the Kinabatangan flood plain, he said. “This suggests that the protection of riparian forests can contribute immensely to the sustainability of proboscis monkeys within these important habitats,” he said. The scientific paper on the subject can be accessed for free until Dec 31 at the following link: https://doi.org/10.1017/S0030605318000 467.
