Researchers develop test that can accurately predict if brain-damaged patients will ever wake up

RelatedThe test can predict with 94 per cent accuracy if a patient will regain consciousness. Family members of brain-damaged patients may no longer have to endure anxious waits to see if their loved ones will ever regain consciousness after scientists developed a test to predict who will wake up. Patients with glucose metabolism below 42 per cent of normal activity did not recover consciousness within 12 months. The team made the discovery while trying to develop a better way of calculating which patients will recover. They injected patients with glucose which contained a tracer molecule that could be watched on scans.
