Those terrorist attacks were the catalyst for many in our country to respond in genuinely thoughtful and productive ways. Over the two decades that followed, many learned about Islam and the Middle East, and reached out to neighbors with whom they had not previously connected. How had I missed the not-so-subtle undertones of neo-nationalism that permeated our national conversation long before September 12, 2001? “Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.” But two decades later, have we learned anything? May we never again allow fear and anger to supersede those values even on the scariest, bleakest of days.
