Renewable energy sector: An unsolicited problem

By Maheesha MudugamuwaConcerns have been raised over the Government’s rush to accept unsolicited proposals submitted to the renewable energy sector from various foreign parties including the new player in the local sector, the US. The attempts have been criticised by the local solar industry, as they claimed the Government is diverting its initial renewable energy plan to achieve President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s pledge on renewable energy. According to government policy, the country should build at least 200,000 rooftop solar power plants, adding 2 GW within the next 10 years, and add another 3 GW of power through ground-mounted solar power plants in order to support the overall target. The families will receive an income by generating renewable energy,” he said. Accordingly, tenders would be called soon to construct the first-ever 100 MW solar power park in Siyambalanduwa, Monaragala in November.
