As the situation worsened, the Republican prisoners began discussing the idea of going on hunger strike. However as the talks which he had been involved in fizzled out, seven prisoners began a hunger strike on October 27 1980. Despite Sands being elected MP, the British authorities refused to budge,and a month after his election, he died after 66 days on hunger strike. He was on the 68th day of his hunger strike when his family were called in. 'Nor Meekly Serve My Time' was first published in 1994, with a new edition printed for the 25th anniversary of the hunger strike in 2006.
