During the Second World War, the area of Slovenia where Stan Zadel and his family lived was rife with German and partisan skirmishes. There, he “survived unspeakable horrors,” says son Chris Zadel. Born in Mala Bukovica, Slovenia, Stanislas Zadel was the second of Ivan and Paulina Zadel’s four children. “Like many in the early 1900s, Ivan took on whatever jobs he could find to support his family,” says Stan’s daughter, Marilyn Garner. “Dad’s hands and mind were never idle.” Stan and Marianne also travelled, returning to Europe and vacationing in Florida, Mexico and Cuba.
