The early signs of this battle were seen in the 2014 elections with BJP’s ‘Congress Mukt Bharat’ rallying cry. But, annihilating the Congress was just a facade for a plan blitzkrieged once the BJP came to power. But, the roots of this battle between relevance and consolidation begin post-Independence. The 1971, 1980 and 1984 elections were aberrations in the decline of the Congress vote share. It comes as no surprise that the party is doing some soul searching to find relevance in today’s India.
