Now more than half a century later, Gray is being honored by the Detroit Golden Gloves boxing association. “Boxing was a metaphor for some of the things I went through in prison,” Gray says. This weekend’s winners will then have the opportunity to fight in the national Golden Gloves boxing tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Aug. 9–14.
