Release of jewelled geckos a `momentous occasion'

The Central Otago Ecological Trust celebrated the release of 14 jewelled geckos recently, marking the first translocation programme for the Mokomoko Dryland Sanctuary. PHOTO: REBECCA NADGEThe Central Otago Ecological Trust celebrated a ''momentous occasion'' at the Mokomoko Dryland Sanctuary recently as 14 jewelled geckos were released as part of the sanctuary's first translocation programme. He and trust volunteers would then monitor the species until winter, when the geckos would begin hibernation. Central Otago Ecological Trust spokesman Grant Norbury described the translocation as a ``momentous occasion'' for the trust. He hoped it would be a stepping stone to introducing other native species into the sanctuary, including grand and Otago skinks, green skinks, and tree weta.
