Redskins sign Jay Gruden to two-year contract extension

Jay Gruden and the Redskins still have decisions to make in free agency. (Photo by Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)INDIANAPOLIS — In the midst of a highly scrutinized week, the Washington Redskins made a move intended to bring some much-needed stability to the franchise, signing Coach Jay Gruden to a two-year contract extension, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed. Gruden was entering the fourth of a five-year contract signed in 2014. However, Gruden — who just led the team to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1996-97 — is the first to earn an extension. But team officials still hope to sign Cousins to a long-term deal before the July 15 deadline, and signing Gruden to an extension could help sell Cousins on improving stability within the organization.
