Record flooding caused by heavy snow and rain in the Great Plains forced the evacuation of thousands and killed at least three people in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and other midwestern states over the past three days. River gauges maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey hit record levels at 39 locations, according to Jonathan Erdman, senior meteorologist at Weather.com. “It was quite an eye-popping event,” he said.
