The publication of the industrial strategy is welcome, though it is essentially a rebranding of the strategy I launched when in coalition. This in turn built on earlier sectoral and cross-industry work. Why it takes two and a half years to do a bit of rebranding is baffling but at least it’s here. The idea of trying to develop a longterm approach to the economy, in a partnership between the government and the private sector, should not be controversial. But in Britain’s obsessively short-term culture of ideologically divisive politics, such policy development has long been stymied.
