A rare humpback whale sighting has been made near New Brighton Pier in Christchurch. A rare sighting of a humpback whale and its calf just off the coast of Christchurch has been captured on film. Jan Everett Two whales, believed to be humpbacks, were spotted just off New Brighton Pier about midday on Thursday. The Oceania population of humpback whales was classified in 2008 as “endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. According to the DOC website, a newborn humpback whale is between 4 and 5 metres and a fully grown adult can reach 15m.
