Rape charge arrest on cruise ship at port

A man arrested on a cruise ship at Port Chalmers over alleged sexual abuse will appear in court on Friday. The 33-year-old was due up in the Dunedin District Court today but the matter was administratively adjourned without him physically appearing before a judge. The defendant, who was aboard the cruise ship Noordam, has been charged with sexually violating a woman by rape and by unlawful sexual connection. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment. Noordam left Port Chalmers at 6pm yesterday and is due to dock in Fiordland National Park this afternoon.
