Randy Starkman always stood up for amateur athletes’ rights. It’s only fitting that the award in his name is back now

Starkman, who died in 2012 at just 51 years of age, covered 12 Olympics. But it’s the stories he wrote when the international spotlight wasn’t on sports ranging from boxing to bobsled and swimming to skiing that made him such a treasure to Canadian athletes. This award, which will be handed out at the 45th Canadian Sport Awards in December, “recognizes the extraordinary career and unparalleled contributions of the late Randy Starkman in telling the stories of Canadian athletes and sport for over 30 years from an athlete’s perspective,” AthletesCAN announced in a statement Friday. “We’re very grateful to AthletesCAN for reviving the award. Other awards include the AthletesCAN social responsibility award, the true sport award, the #AthleteVoice rep of the year award, the Bruce Kidd leadership award and the people’s choice award for most trending moment of the year.
