The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation says no. As usual, teaching unions have been telling the public that it’s all about the kids, but let’s not fool ourselves. The government and the secondary teachers certainly start their talks far apart and if the government is going to stick to its budget elimination plan, it doesn’t have a lot of flexibility. If the teaching unions get more than one per cent, it will become extremely difficult to hold the line with other public sector unions. When the government proposed an increase in the average secondary school class from 22 to 28, one suspected that they would be happy to get 25.
