Barely into his twenties, Manikandan was stopped by traffic police sub-inspector and two constabes for jumping the signal at the S.R.P Tools junction. He duly paid the fine of ₹100 but, smarting from the brush with policemen, he started taking video of them stopping other motorists. The police officer said Manikandan wanted to catch the policemen taking bribes and the video would be proof of their guilt. The traffic policemen were apparently irritated by Manikandan acting uppity. The police officer says Manikandan was abused and at one point, the two sides came to blows, in public.
