REA lights up two Bayelsa communities with solar hybrid mini-grids

Two communities in Bayelsa State, Akipelai and Oloibiri, have been provided with two solar hybrid mini-grids with the capacity of 134.64kW under the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP). The project is expected to provide communities with clean, safe and reliable electricity to an estimated 364 households. REA in a statement issued on Tuesday explained that the mini-grids utilise lithium-ion battery storage to provide reliable power throughout non-daylight hours and are designed to scale up as individual household and communal power demand increases. “These two systems include 134.64kW of solar PV, 180kWh of lithium battery storage and two units of 100kva diesel generator sets,” it said. The solar hybrid plants have been commissioned under the Performance-Based Grant (PBG) component of NEP.
