"Pte Hammond exemplifies these qualities. It has been a privilege to get to know Pte Hammond and to experience his selflessness," he said. Three years after the end of World War II, Ghana, then the Gold Coast, was rocked by riots following the killing of three Ghanaian veterans who had been demanding compensation for their service during the conflict.
