Ireland’s world champions will get their sternest test so far this season as the World Cup regatta in Lucerne gets under way today. Double world champion Sanita Puspure is back in action for the first time since taking the European title against a depleted field last autumn. Also looking for a podium place will be Switzerland’s Jeannine Gmelin and Great Britain’s Vicky Thornley. Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy will be renewing old rivalries in the lightweight men’s double sculls. In the non-Olympic boat classes Lydia Heaphy and Gary O’Donovan will contest the women’s and men’s lightweight single sculls.
