A landlord cancelled his Sky Sports subscription and allowed his regulars to watch live football on their own computer monitor at his troll-themed pub. Mr Airlie was taken to court after he allowed customers to bring a flat-screen monitor into his bar and watch football matches using personal digital subscriptions, after baulking at a £1,300 per month quote to subscribe to Sky Sports. Lord Sandison ruled that the pub had breached Sky’s copyright through the attempt to exploit a “loophole” to allow customers to continue to watch football matches, after it cancelled its expensive subscription at the end of 2022. Cost of Sky subscription ‘grossly excessive’In court papers, the pub is described as boasting “a large collection of troll memorabilia, including statues, statuettes and photographs” as its “main decorative theme”. He instead agreed to allow a regular to bring in his own computer monitor to his pub so he could watch football matches through Sky Go, a digital streaming service available to private Sky customers.
