Transgender rights supporters protest against the Speak Up For Women group and the council decision allowing it to hold a public meeting in Nelson on Wednesday night. More than 100 people supporting transgender rights lined Trafalgar St on Wednesday night opposite the Trafalgar St Hall where the Speak Up For Women group was holding a public meeting. At the protest, Q-Youth co-ordinator Zen Smith said the council’s decision to allow the meeting to take place was disappointing. The Speak Up For Women meeting itself was a smaller affair, with about 40 people in attendance. After the meeting Johnson said she was happy with the turnout and supported the rights of the protestors to assemble.
