Amid her campaigning in Wayanad, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra interacted with widows of farmers who had ended their lives owing to financial distress in the district. Ms. Gandhi met them just before attending a public meeting here and sought to know why their husbands had taken the extreme step. Twenty-five farmers in the State, including eight in Wayanad, had committed suicide in six months owing to financial distress, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee secretary K.K. “We are happy that Priyanka found time to console us,” Santha of Cheengode, widow of a farmer at Nadavayal, said. Five widows submitted their grievances to Ms. Gandhi, who promised them that the issue would be brought to the attention of her brother, Mr. Gandhi.
