Lack of proper medical facilities and vacancies in the Central Jail hospital at Asia's largest prison, housing more than 15,000 prisoners, came under the scanner of the Delhi High Court as it issued a slew of measures for the authorities. The court noted that the lack of medical facilities in the jail not only causes prejudice to poor prisoners but also affect the exchequers of the government as rich inmates are taken to private hospital for treatment. "The prisoners have to wait for long, travel long distances and sometimes even wait for the court orders to get treated which may itself cause prejudice to the prisoners," the court said. The court was also told that there are 108 sanctioned posts for paramedical staff and 92 of them are physically filled. "A shocking state of affairs has come up regarding the vacancies in absence of medical representatives in Central Jail Complex, Tihar Jail no 3," the court said.
