Earlier this week, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) announced that it is reviewing the ‘historical context’ of the song because of its associations with slavery. The song is believed to have been initially used by rugby fans when Martin Offiah was playing at the Middlesex Sevens tournament at Twickenham in 1987. Speaking earlier this week, Offiah claimed that a decision to ban the song, which is still widely sung by England supporters at matches, could be problematic. ‘Before we start complaining about Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, I want to know what the rest of the words are,’ the Prime Minister said.
