Previously unfancied suburbs facing brunt of housing boom


Lower Hutt's traditionally working-class suburbs are experiencing bigger property value increases than their better-off neighbours. Unfancied just a few years ago, the likes of Naenae and Wainuiomata are experiencing a boom within a boom, says Professionals real estate agent John Ross. MATTHEW TSO/STUFF High property prices in the Wellington region have resulted in increasing interest in traditionally affordable areas like Wainuiomata. Urban historian Ben Schrader said the demographics of traditionally working-class suburbs like Naenae and Wainuiomata were changing as they experienced renewed interest. Just 14 of 59 suburbs in the Wellington region now had median prices below $500,000.
