Joseph Atkinson, the early publisher of the Toronto Star and defender of the working class, would not likely approve of how race-focused, race-divisive and race-reactionary, and non-working-class-uniting, the Star’s editorial stance, commentary and content have become, were he alive today. As Rob Urie explains in “Identity, Race and Electoral Politics” in CounterPunch.org, Aug. 28, identity politics, as it’s being played out these days in academia, the media, in corporate headquarters and in politics, is racist and reactionary, not “progressive.”“Of course, racism is a curse upon the land. The question is what to do about it?” Rob Urie writes. Who and what are the interests that matter in a capitalist society? When it comes to real life and inequality, it’s more about class, not solely about gender and race.
