It’s the same system used by the federal Conservative party. The second was the social conservative vote, which had gathered behind candidate Tanya Granic Allen and then overwhelmingly flowed to Ford after Granic Allen was eliminated. Less than a year earlier, DeLorey had managed O’Toole’s 2017 federal leadership campaign where he finished third. In that race, Andrew Scheer capitalized on the point system and the social conservative vote to eke out a narrow victory over Maxime Bernier. This is the story of how the O’Toole campaign managed to pull off an underdog victory in the 2020 Conservative leadership race, told through the perspective of those who worked on it at senior levels.
