Porirua sexual assault accused will have fitness to plead assessed

By Jimmy EllinghamThe man accused of forcing his way into a 65-year-old woman's Porirua home and subjecting her to a prolonged sexual attack will have his fitness to plead assessed. The 40-year-old, who faces eight charges stemming from the incident on June 17, appeared in the Porirua District Court today. Judge Denys Barry said he saw no alternative but to extend the temporary suppression order while "the case stands in something of a limbo". He also requested a "screening assessment" into the man's fitness to plead and on the issue of sanity. Defence lawyer Nick Chisnall successfully asked for a temporary name suppression order to continue until the man makes his pleas.
