Poor road repair: four site engineers arrested

The police on Sunday arrested four site engineers working for private road contractors in connection with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) complaint on poor road repair work, taking the total number of arrests in the case to 14. Those arrested on Sunday include Sanjay Dinanath Singh, Sunil Bapusaheb Chavan, Sandip Ashok Jadhav and Santhanavel Velmani. The BMC had claimed, after an internal investigation, it was cheated to the tune of Rs 10.56 crore in 34 road contracts. Additional Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh had prepared the internal report and 17 of the 34 contracts were worth Rs 5 crore and more each. Last week, the Azad Maidan police had arrested 10 third party auditors employed with SGS India and Indian Registrar of Shipping (Industrial Services), which were contracted by the BMC to ensure the quality of work done by private road contractors was up to the mark.
