BANGKOK—Thailand’s king formally began his reign as the 10th monarch of the Chakri dynasty in an elaborate coronation ceremony steeped in centuries of tradition. King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun in 2016 succeeded his father, who served more than 70 years before his death that year. Saturday’s rites consecrated the royal transition in accordance Thailand’s Brahmin and Buddhist rituals, cementing King Vajiralongkorn’s role as the country’s monarch.
