Police plan to target sideline abuse at junior sports games

Police plan to target sideline abuse at junior sports gamesSTUFF Police say they're hoping to encourage goodwill on the sidelines at junior sports. A government-backed $300,000 pilot project known as Good Sports was launched last year to tackle unruly sideline behaviour. Police could soon be patrolling junior sports matches to target parents and spectators hurling abuse from the sidelines. In a statement, harm reduction prevention manager Detective Inspector Tony Hill said police would support clubs and organisations in their own programmes encouraging positive sideline behaviour. The issue was also in the spotlight in early July when Wellington Hurricanes player Victor Vito went undercover to highlight abuse of referees.
