Police flag illegal diversion of explosives

The Kerala Police have flagged up the need to prevent the illegal diversion of conventional explosives for unlawful purposes given the changed security scenario and threat perception in south India following the Easter Day attacks in Sri Lanka. Officers said the police anti-sabotage squads were kitted out with the latest equipment, including detectors, that could sense triacetone triperoxide (TATP) type explosives used for the Sri Lanka bombings. At a less lethal level, officials said explosives used for mining were often rerouted for blast fishing in rivers and backwaters in the State. They were set to analyse cases registered under the explosives Act to detect patterns, if any. The Central government has initiated a System for Explosive Tracking and Training Project (SETT) that could help law enforcers to monitor the movement of explosives from the manufacturer to the stockist and buyer.
