And, no, it’s not from a critical defund-the-police activist group; it comes straight from Ontario’s chiefs of police. The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police is, once again, calling for sweeping changes to the discipline system, including the power to suspend officers without pay when they’re facing criminal charges or allegations of serious misconduct. Among other things, it would have given police chiefs more power to suspend officers without pay. It will give police chiefs some new powers to suspend without pay officers who are facing a “serious” criminal charge. Even as we wait for those all-important regulations, police chiefs are saying more than those new powers are needed to fix a “host of underlying issues” in the discipline system.
