Helen Matthews owned Birchdale for 18 years and used to spend half her year there, and the other half in New York. "We feel like we're stewards, and we hope that we can be good stewards for this place," said Stanley. The main lodge at Birchdale remains a spot for visitors to gather, with a large table, fireplace and kitchen area.
