Pioneering pāua feed developed in Southland


Marine scientist Morgan Manivannan was frustrated with a lack of New Zealand-specific abalone feed, so he designed some himself. When marine scientist Morgan Manivannan began working with pāua, he couldn’t find a feed specifically for New Zealand abalone species, so he started developing his own. His efforts mean The New Zealand Abalone Company, based in Bluff, is the first pāua farm in the country producing its own artificial feed on-site. Robyn Edie/Stuff Marine scientist Morgan Manivannan is trialling artificial food specifically designed for New Zealand species of pāua, at The New Zealnd Abalone Company'a pāua farm in Bluff. Juveniles typically feed on seaweed, and he and hatchery manager Brae Forrester are raising a control group alongside the pāua raised on artificial feed.
