(Photo: Achadthaya Chuenniran)PHUKET - Residents in the Saphan Hin area of Muang district on this tourist island are warned to wear masks to protect against dust and smoke following a landfill fire on Saturday. The blaze broke out in landfill cells 4 and 5, fuelled by wood and tree branches, at 3.17pm, according to Phuket City Municipality. The relevant agencies are coordinating operations to minimise potential effects on nearby communities, said Phuket City Mayor Supachok La-ongpetch. The island produces about 1,200 tonnes of waste a day, but the Phuket City incinerators can handle only 500 tonnes, or 40% of the total. The Phuket City municipal landfill holds an estimated 1.2 million tonnes of waste awaiting disposal.
