5,277 fire hotspots a new high in Thailand


(Photo: Sunthorn Kongwarakom)Thailand has recorded 5,277 fire hotspots, most of them concentrated in the North and Northeast, while the figure in neighbouring Laos has surpassed 9,000, the highest in the region, according to satellite data. Of the 5,277 hotspots in Thailand, 3,117 were detected in conservation forests, followed by 1,310 in national reserved forests. Agricultural areas accounted for 392 hotspots, while 227 were found in communities and other areas. Another 203 hotspots were recorded in Sor Por Kor land reform areas, and 28 were detected along highways. Among neighbouring countries, Laos recorded the highest number of hotspots at 9,313, followed by Myanmar with 1,548, Vietnam (886), Cambodia (657) and Malaysia (20).
