The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers introduced their new mascot, a bear called Teddy, named in honour of Lakers president Ted Higgins, at Thursday night’s Lakers game against the Six Nations Chiefs at the Memorial Centre. Marketing, sales and community events co-ordinator Jordan Winch said the new mascot was a surprise. Higgins was only informed on Wednesday that the new mascot was named for him. Previous mascot Leo the Lion was retired prior to the season in honour of Riddick MacHart, the Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School student who had portrayed the mascot until he was killed in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 7 east of Peterborough in November that also claimed the lives of his parents and the driver of the other vehicle and seriously injured his sister. — Anna Taylor, Special to The ExaminerSHARE:
