That’s the existential quandary at the heart of Photograph, the latest from Indian writer/director Ritesh Batra, whose 2013 film The Lunch Box was a global sensation. Nawazuddin Siddiqui stars as Rafi, a genial Mumbai street photographer whose grandmother has been pressuring him to find a wife. To keep the old woman happy, he convinces the shy, brainy Miloni (Sanya Malhotra) to pose as his fiancée. The quintessential scene has to be the one where Rafi’s friend, another photographer, is taking a picture of them. These two look like they’d rather be anywhere else than next to each other, and I’d rather be almost anywhere than watching their awkward, unsatisfying romance.
