Philippine vice-president questions truth about termination of military pact with US

MANILA (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN): Vice President Leni Robredo on Sunday (Feb 9) criticised the government’s inconsistencies regarding the termination of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA). “We don’t know what’s the truth one government agency says this is true, but another one says the opposite, ” said Robredo over her weekly radio show following. She was replying to an announcement on Friday by presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo that President Rodrigo Duterte had instructed executive secretary Salvador Medialdea to tell Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr to send the notice to terminate the longstanding military pact with the US government. On the same day, Medialdea said that he had not received the president’s instruction to terminate the VFA. The Inquirer report, citing presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo, follows Duterte's threat in January to end the agreement after Washington cancelled a visa for a senator who used to lead his drug war.
