Sumathi of Pethuparai Women Association, who submitted a petition against her marriage, appealed that permission be denied for the marriage, and that the activist and her British partner Desmond Coutinho be directed to leave the hill station as their stay would affect the peace and unity among tribals.“Our day-to-day life was affected in 2007 owing to the Maoist movement in the hill station and we do not want a repeat of that,” the petitioner said. In another petition, N. Thirupathi of Perumal Malai said Ms. Sharmila’s stay would affect unity among tribalsSo far, five petitions have been filed against her proposed marriage and her stay in Kodaikanal. Ms. Sharmila and her British partner Desmond Coutinho had submitted papers for their marriage at the Sub-Registrar Office on July 12.
